So what is the going rate for an Ewok?

The cool people at Seeking the Stork posed the question: How can we afford to raise a child?

The fact of the matter is we don’t know how we’re going to do it. If every couple crunched the numbers beforehand then we’d have such a shortage of children we’d have to close down school districts.

I grew up with two sisters, two parents in a one bedroom in NYC. Maribelle had bigger apartments but mother would occasionally use benefits such as medicaid and government food surplus. Our parents were factory workers. We didn’t starve. We didn’t have trendy clothes. Or fancy jewelry. Child care was neighbors and relatives and the occasional undocumented immigrant.

As for Mikey and myself we’ve been sooo lucky to have put little of our own money into trying to conceive. I’ve had insurance, a flexible medical spending account and some tax refund money. We live in a subisdized co-op, no mortgage and maintenance is based on income. But I have student loans, she has some credit card debt and will be taking more loans for seminary. In short, we are going to be a struggling lower middle class family.

But we know what’s that like. We know about clipping coupons, shopping around, finding cheap child care. There are babysitting operations all over my neighborhood run by kindhearted Dominicans, Mexicans, and other Latino immigrants. Is it Montessori? No but it’s what we can afford. Our kid will go to public school, wear k***t, thrift shop and t**g*t clothing. We’ll apply for WIC, food stamps and if I ever lose my job, medicaid and welfare.

My baby shower theme is going to be “IF it ain’t broke…give it to us.”

When people ask me that questions I laugh in their face. Growing up, we didn’t buy anything that was not NEEDED. I learned the difference between need and want at a very young age and I think it was a good lesson.

Our kids will learn that lesson as well. Even if somehow we end up having more money that we expect they will learn that because I will not raise apathetic people who do expect everything to be handed to them on a platter. I can’t stand how some folks have such a sense of entitlement. I worked my ASS off for what I have and I’m better for it.

Right on. We are thinking very similarly. Our kid will have the added bonus of being the first granchild on either side, so I’m sure that will help…but we’re all about creative economics!

I am so, so grateful to have you all as resources. Sometimes all it takes is for someone else to say, “It’ll work out – it may not be easy, but you’ll find a way.”

And yo, I am SO borrowing that baby shower theme!

I love your shower theme!!! When a friend told me she expected all new stuff for her baby I laughed and said “can’t wait to start bargain hunting!”… I don’t buy designer stuff for myself – why would I for THE KID!?!?!

When they’re babies there as so few *necessary* items needed – boobs, diapers (cloth is great!), and clothing which is cheap to come by, or free! A lot of the nicer things to have (stollers, bouncy seats, etc) are easy to get for free, at baby showers, or garage sales. It’s weird how out of control it gets for some people. All the injection molded plastic crap freaks me out.

Can I share your baby shower theme? We could make invitations out of old Christmas cards with a few basic alterations!
